COVID-19 PANDEMIC – Wednesday 27 May 2020

Mental Health Law Centre is committed to the continuation of our services during the COVID-19 pandemic and we are committed to protecting the health and safety of our staff, clients and the community.

These are extraordinary times, but MHLC is well placed to continue to work as usual, and we will continue to provide our important services.

OUR SERVICES ARE CONTINUING

Please be assured that we are continuing to provide services during this time. All of our paid staff continue to work normal hours with no reduction in client services anticipated at this time.

Over the past 18 months, MHLC has invested in a significant upgrade of IT infrastructure and databases. This work means that all of our staff can work from anywhere and we have already introduced work from home measures.

We have a small staff of 10 and we want to make sure that our staff stay well so that we can continue to work. We know that our vulnerable population will be impacted severely by this health crisis and it is imperative that we continue to support and represent them during this time. Accordingly, we have implemented some measures to ensure that our business operations are not affected and we can continue to serve our clients.

CHANGES TO THE WAY WE COMMUNICATE WITH OUR CLIENTS

Effective immediately, we are speaking with all clients via phone or videolink only. We will seek instructions from our clients as to which method they prefer and all work will be done in this way.

CHANGES TO THE WAY WE APPEAR IN COURT

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, our lawyers were in Court every day of the week. We need to keep representing clients, but we also need to keep well.

So effective immediately, we have started to appear in Court via telephone. We have written to the heads of each jurisdiction that we appear in and asked them to help us facilitate that.

CHANGES TO OUR RECEPTION AND TELEPHONE ADVICE LINE

Our receptionist continues working her usual hours and our Telephone Advice Line continues with reduced volunteer staff. There will be a short delay in returning your call, but rest assured, we will respond. Please be patient while we get back to you.
