We were pleased to welcome WA Law Society President, Nicholas van Hattem, to our Subiaco office for a tour of the Mental Health Law Centre and a briefing on our latest work.
He also spent time with the telephone advice line team, whose paralegals provide general legal information to the community between 9am and 4pm from Monday to Friday.
MHLC CEO Shayla Strapps said the Law Society’s Public Purposes Trust makes a valuable contribution to the telephone advice line through its grant program.
“The Trust aims to advance and improve education and access to information about the law and legal services,” she explained.
“The telephone advice line provides students and law graduates first-hand experience in dealing with clients under the guidance of, and with support from our MHLC lawyers, and provides people experiencing legal issues relating to mental health illness with a place to get information and advice. Since 2019, the grant has allowed us to expand our advice line and offer more placements to volunteer law graduates and law students. Our volunteers tell us that the training they receive is an invaluable practical way to learn how to practise law.”
You can contact the telephone advice line on 9328 8012 (option 2) or freecall 1800 620 285. To find out more about our other services, head to our services page.
